R a c k e t s & D r a p e s

In 1998 Rackets & Drapes turned the Christ-centered music scene on it's head with their debut album "Candyland", and with a live stage show at Cornerstone by introducing their own brand of Alice Cooper and Kiss inspired ShockRock. With creepy, industrial tinged metal and faith inspired, yet never subtle lyrics they had won their share of both fans and antagonists. By 2000 R&D, signed to MCM, released their much anticipated follow-up "Trick or Treat" to an audience that just couldnt get enough. After a two year silence followed by rumors of a breakup R&D are back. Never fearful of courting controversy, Rackets surprised everyone with talk of a new lineup, a new sound, and a very new look. Although still holding fast to their horror rock roots, R&D have given up their ShockRock image for the decidedly Glam inspired look usually associated with David Bowie, The New York Dolls, and Dead or Alive. The tracks have already been layed for R&D's third release which promises to be just as insightful and controversial as ever.

Interview by Jason Adrift

Kandi: This is our first Interview since 2000

Adrift: Who was that with? HM?

Kandi: yup. Havent said a thing since we have been back

Adrift: I think i read it. Well you've always been good at keeping your fans updated at least.

Kandi: We try, lol

Adrift: Just a quick question before we get started. When did Rackets originally start

Kandi: 1994

Adrift: Ok, I know the demo came out in 97

Kandi: (We) were called Human Soup till 95

...Sabbatha enters the conversation...

Adrift: Hi Sabbatha

Sabbatha: Hello

Adrift: Ready for this interview?

Sabbatha: I guess

Adrift: Kandi did tell you about it right? lol

Sabbatha: lol, yeah

Adrift: Ok well lets jump right in i suppose. Bare with me this is only my 2nd interview

Sabbatha: My first.

Adrift: Cool, we'll learn together
Well first off, we should mention that Sabbatha is fairly new to Rackets & Drapes. Tell us how you got involved.

Sabbatha: um... I became good friends with Kandi and Kalliapi this past fall. I had always liked R&D. It just kinda fell into place. I actually joined in Feburary I think.

Kandi: See... Im bad like that. I find lost lonely peeps and take em home, and ask Kal if i can keep em. She said it was okay

Adrift: lol

Sabbatha: I tried to escape, but they caught me.

Adrift: Kandy. This is a very broad question i know, but what's new since the last album Trick or Treat?

Kandi: Everything actually. I had to step away for awhile, a sabbatical if you will. Life was speeding by, kids growing up too fast, ect. Kinda settled down for a bit. The family thing, counseling, surgery, my walk with God, things that needed to be focused on for awhile

Adrift: Fans know and we've already discussed talking about this, but you've been dealing with some very personal stuff in your life. Do you mind discussing it right now?

Kandi: no not at all, I dont have much of a mind left anyhoo

Sabbatha: His foot fungus?

Kandi: LOL, hey, i fixed that

Adrift: uh... maybe we shouldnt talk about the fungus

Sabbatha: it's a touchy subject for him, be carefull what you say

Adrift: ok

Kandi: tough acting tanactine

Adrift: lol, Well if i may be so bold... what is TG?

Kandi: Some new rating for motion pictures

Sabbatha: **is starting to wonder if we'll ever give a straight answer**

Kandi: lol, straight? never! forward maybe

Adrift: Well from what you've told me and from what i know, Trans-gendering is a psychological condition where you feel as though you are a woman in a mans body but you still have affections for the opposite sex. Is that right...

Kandi: ok... What i find in the TG communities is much like any other one. Lets say gothic. To some, one band is (gothic) to others its not. Same with TG
There is such a broad variety of them. To some, an MTF as you mentioned above is much different than say a crossdresser. Its such a broad perspective. One cant just label it and call it (a) type

Adrift: A case by case basis?

Kandi: yes. exactly. You have to talk to each one personally to see who and what they are and why. There are many myths
1. It's tied in with homosexuality
false. The moment you say Transgender, you think gay. This is false, TG or TS is the medical term for the much known greek mythology term hermaphrodite.
2. All have the change
false. Its not just something you can go out and do, and very few make it to this stage
3. All desire to be a woman
false. To some they already are. To others, they just express their femininity part time. Its too broad to narrow it down
4. Its sexual
false. Many of the TG i know are not active in sexuality, post ops included. Yes, some are, just as anyone is.

Sabbatha: All these things he's mentioning aren't always false... like he said, it's all different for everyone. You have to get to know the person.

Kandi: right

Sabbatha: just don't assume they are true

Kandi: Everyone is different. Notice i say SOME. I can only speak for myself

Adrift: When did you know you were TG and what stage do you feel you are at now?

Kandi: For me it started when i was 5 y/o. Dreams, thoughts, ect.. Next stage started at 13. Started "dressing" if you will. Been hiding that till now, but never knew "what" and "why". Started counseling with pastor in 99 about it. Recently saw a proffesional on the matter this year. And yes, been in the word and prayer about it, for it was GOD who showed me the whos and why its always been there. I just never understood it, or what it was

Adrift: How has your family supported you threw this?

Kandi: well now my daughter thinks its great. I cant really say much about what she wears now can i? lol

Sabbatha: No but Kal can, so she's not off the hook yet

Kandi: tru... (and)i cant borrow her stuff unless i ask. My wife has always known, like i said, its always been there just not the whats and such ...and yes, she is STILL my wife and will be until the end

Adrift: your fan base has seemingly had mixed reactions to the news

Kandi: yes, imagine that, for R&D brought freaks together. Its why they all have each other. Why is this such a big ordeal? How many years did it take for the goths to be accepted?

Sabbatha: Because it's never been out in the open.

Adrift: How do you respond to Christians pointing out scripture that TG is wrong?

Kandi: They never have one that holds water, only doctrinal opinions, and TG is not something you just decide to do it doesnt matter what you think. Its like telling a Bi Polar that they are wrong and they will just cut it out.

Sabbatha: **is wondering how many emails we'll get after this interview with scriptures saying we need to repent**

Kandi: again? bummer........

Adrift: Well despite this news it seems you still have a very loyal fanbase that will remain with you to the end

Kandi: Because many have taken the time to understand it, and not judge for it. For they know their lives have things in them no one else can understand

Adrift: Going in a slightly different direction. What will the concept for the new album be then?

Kandi: I think the title says it all, yea?

Adrift: well that leads me to the next question, whats the title of the new album?

Sabbatha: yeah, it does... Love Letters From Hell

Kandi: There ya have it

Adrift: How do you percieve the evolution of Rackets and Drapes with this new album?

Kandi: It came from apes

Adrift: Lol

Kandi: its different for sure

Sabbatha: It's all electronic now

Kandi: With the time off i was able to not think about it, and when the time came to write again... the perspective is much different. more matured... in more areas than one, much like me

Sabbatha: haha... you wish

Adrift: What kind of instruments are we expecting on this new album. I imagine R&D is no longer shockrock

Kandi: Nothing but the wonders of modern technology

Sabbatha: Some of it is (still shockrock), it's got a good mix

Kandi: Its still got its moments. "Terror In Tinseltown", "Halloween". Its still the same me lyrically, issues and what not. We just decided not to make the T issue the front of everything its just part of it. The music is us as before

Adrift: Can you compare the new sound to anything? spooky industrial? ebm?

Kandi: apocalyptic transgender culture shock... Its got everything: dance, terror, mosh. Its too hard to title

Sabbatha: In some of the songs you will just think to yourself... "what the heck?"

Adrift: what are youre expectations for this release? how do you think people will react?

Kandi: So far, its loved. The best R&D ever

Sabbatha: I love it... I think others will too

Adrift: Rackets & Drapes has lost a few members and gained one. What are the prior members up to?

Sabbatha: 26?

Kandi: I buried them all in the back yard

Adrift: Lol

Kandi: See im tempermental... emphasis on the MENTAL

Sabbatha: I'm just waiting on him to come after me with a knife

Kandi: Just be a good gurl and do what your told

Sabbatha: yes ma'am

Kandi: Actually Larvae is doing the studio thing, Charlotte i have no idea, Kal is doing the school thing and work, Angel is doing the school thing, and Twitch got married and had a baby

Adrift: lol, you folks gotta be interesting in the studio

Kandi: We can be. We have no idea why some of the songs are titled what they are LOL

Sabbatha: I'm not.. I just sit there

Kandi: we get going and..... come back the next time and go what?

Sabbatha: It came out a lot different then I expected

Adrift: How so?

Sabbatha: well... I don't know really. I just remember from our practicing, then recording... most of the songs turned out different then I imagined. I had never heard him sing with any of our songs till we recorded. That's a big reason. That, and a lot of the stuff we did we came up with while recording

Adrift: Well i only have a couple more questions for ya.. Where did the name Rackets & Drapes come from?

Kandi: I think it has a german lineage

Adrift: I shoulda expected that answer

Kandi: Rackets- Noise Drapes- Coverings. We make noise about things shoved under the carpet

Adrift: Lol

Sabbatha: It's not funny man. **feelings have been hurt**

Adrift: oh you were serious... my apologies

Kandi: thats right hun, now get back under the rug

Sabbatha: lol, yeah

Adrift: lol, Last question and then im out of yer hair. What's in the future for R&D

Kandi: hmmmm....i cant seem to find my tarot cards.....

Adrift: Oi

Sabbatha: ska ska ska!

Kandi: honestly i dont know

Adrift: Well you're going to be touring here soon correct?

Kandi: um......

Sabbatha: haha

Kandi: good one

Sabbatha: no one will let us play

Kandi: We are waiting on MCM and the release date for the album. From there we can make a better decision. No sense in touring a new album if nonone has heard it yet

Sabbatha: everyone that has asked us, has changed their minds

Kandi: every single one of them... and thats ok, its not like we are trying to "preach" anything or force others to change their opinions. We are who we are. we still share the gospel. How so? easy.... Jesus loves you and I love what you did with your hair! (Sabbatha **sits back and watches Kandi interview to himself**)

Adrift: He's better at it than i am. Well i thank you both very much for your time. Anything youd like to add before we go?

Sabbatha: I add this... 3+4, it equals 7

Kandi: lol. hmm... last words
life is a drag, so enjoy every single second!
